Electrochemical
AvCarb has developed a portfolio of materials that solve problems moving energy in electrochemical systems. Carbon fabrics, papers and graphite laminates are produced in volume today for applications including fuel cells, specialty batteries, sensor technology, and industrial scale chemical processes. These carbon electrode backings, or substrates, are available with functional coatings (e.g. PTFE or micro-porous layer treatments). The unique properties that AvCarb's electrochemical customers need include: Conduction of thermal and electrical energy, thermal and chemical inertness, and tailored pore structures.
Fuel Cells
Fuel Cells are electrochemical devices that efficiently generate electricity from hydrogen or other sources of hydrogen containing gases. They generate only clean liquid water as a byproduct with absolutely no pollution. AvCarb’s GDL material is a key component of these systems which today power many of our cars, trucks, and other devices. AvCarb has been a leader in fuel cell GDL technology around the world and has developed a reputation for delivering consistent, high quality, reliable material.

Electrolyzers
Electrolyzers are electrochemical devices that produce hydrogen from the electrolysis of water without the generation of carbon emissions. Since virtually all of the world’s annual consumption of 100 million tons of hydrogen is met by the steam reforming of methane from natural gas, which produces 6 tons of CO2 for every ton of hydrogen produced, the world is increasingly turning to electrolysis as a source of clean hydrogen. AvCarb’s carbon GDL and PTL materials will become essential components on these devices. AvCarb has been a leader in fuel cell GDL technology around the world and has developed a reputation for delivering consistent, high quality, reliable material.

Flow Batteries
Flow battery developers around the world have designed in AvCarb® felts, fabrics and papers to produce high-performance systems designed to last for decades. While individual system architectures may differ, AvCarb® materials are typically used as electrode or bipolar plate backings to promote electrochemical reactions during operation.
